Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using such treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly starving," described an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
